Acupuncture’s Versatility is shown in Its Capacity to Treat Several Respiratory Conditions

The sadhus and gurus in the ancient times have found that the way we breathe can either treat or cause many conditions in our body. Breath is the body’s way of allowing air to enter into our body. This air goes into each and every cell and tissue of our body and so our health gets affected by the quality of air we breathe. If the air quality is excellent, we will not need any kind of treatment or medication, but we are living in a polluted environment, thanks to the “advancement of technology” and so, we are beset by several forms of respiratory disorders and the number of allergic and asthmatic patients is growing day by day.

There are treatments for these disorders but the conventional ones often involve the use of heavy medication. On the other hand, there are modalities which do not entail the use of drugs and are much safer to use. One of the most popular forms of these safe therapies is acupuncture. This unique form of healing is a very old process that has been practiced in China. Practitioners of acupuncture believe that there exists inside the body an energy that constantly circulates throughout the body. This energy travels along channels known as meridians. The body has a number of meridians inside it and each of them is connected to a specific body organ.

Acupuncturists think that any respiratory condition is due to the disruptions in the meridians. In order to resolve these disruptions, acupuncture is used. Acupuncture is a process that utilizes hair-thin needles that need to be inserted at points in the body known as acupuncture points. These acupuncture points lie in energy pathways called meridians. When the needles are inserted, the meridians are stimulated to release neurotransmitters that help the body heal itself. Depending on the condition of the patient, the needles are left inserted at a certain amount of time in the body. During this period, you may experience a little numbness in the limbs although it is often transitory. After a while the patient starts to feel relaxed and comfortable as the effects of the treatment kick in. The needles also help the tight muscles to relax enabling blood flow to the target area to increase.

Treating respiratory conditions with acupuncture is a proven therapy and it not only addresses the symptoms of the condition but also the underlying causes of the problem as well. It is usually much better than conventional medicine as it does not have any side effects at all. Respiratory conditions that can be resolved with acupuncture include:

Bronchitis – This condition comes about due to lung tissue injury. Despite the fact that acupuncture is unable to repair the tissues, it allows the free flow of air in the injured tissues to keep them healthy. Depending on the seriousness of your bronchitis, acupuncture may require more than one session of treatment.

Pulmonary disease – Acupuncture treats this condition by improving the vitality of the body, boosting circulation into the affected areas and balancing the respiratory system. The body’s immune system is strengthened in order to repulse any infection.

Asthma – Asthma is usually a symptom of an allergic reaction. These can be reaction to an odor, dust, pollens, etc. In treating asthma, acupuncture lessens allergic reactions, balances the parasympathetic/sympathetic nervous system, releases neurotransmitters and stimulates gland secretion in order to restore the normal function of the respiratory system. It also lowers the severity and frequency of asthmatic attacks.

Acupuncture also works for shortness of breath, cough, emphysema, the common cold, and sinusitis.

If you are intending to get acupuncture treatment, you need to look for a licensed and experienced acupuncturist in order to prevent any accidents or injuries. There are instances where an inexperienced or unqualified acupuncturist can insert needles into wrong acupuncture points that may injure a patient. A patient can also get infected with an unsterilized and infected needle or a needle is placed incorrectly that it can puncture a body organ. So if you have an acupuncturist in mind, make sure about his work experience and credentials. Your health is precious and you want to make sure it is in the hands of someone who really knows what he/she is doing.
